What’s the strongest earthquake as measured by the Richter Scale that the Transamerica Bldg could withstand?
If you’re referring to the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco, this is a hard question to answer. The building was built in the 1970′s, and seismic building codes have changed a lot since then, as well as our understanding of earthquake wave propagation (i.e. how earthquakes shake the ground.) Today, buildings are designed by running “virtual” earthquakes in computer models, and seeing how the building will respond. I know that they didn’t have these capabilities thirty years ago, but I’m sure that they accounted for earthquakes somehow. I can give you an educated guess, however: the building was probably designed with a local magnitude of about 7.9 in mind.
