Is the Raleigh Talus 3.0 a good entry level bike?
I live next to a lake with a lot of dirt roads and four wheeler trails, but there is also a lot of asphalt around as well. I went to my local bike shop and they said the Talus would be a great bike and that I would be able to everything I wanted with it. I have a cheap Walmart mountain bike that was about 100 bucks, but I can’t even get it to go up a hill on a dirt road, and you feel every bump and rock in the road with it. Would a Talus ride better? I’m in good shape and I could get the bike to go up hill on the highway, but on the dirt road I would put it in the lowest gear and still come to a complete stand still and then just get off and push the bike.
Would it ride better? That’s hard to say because of the terrain you’re going over. Of course you’re going to feel bumps & rocks if that’s the terrain you’re going over. But a better bike will do it better.
The gearing on the Talus 3.0 is geared more for off-road riding with the Shimano FC-M131 24/34/42t front crankset. Most discount store bikes have a 28/38/48 crankset. Keep in mind this is still an “entry level” mountain bike. The Talus 4.0 will have a “cassette” rear cog vs. a “freewheel” and disc brakes. Depends on how rough the roads and/or trails are that you’ll be using.
If it means anything – I am THE biggest Raleigh fan on this website to answer questions on a regular basis. And I would still suggest the 4.0 for anything more than light trails.
