Music Concerts in Canarias
There is so much more to the volcanic isles of the Canaries than the sun, sea and sand, that have traditionally drawn in the tourists. A diverse and vibrant cultural scene is something the locals are rightly proud of, and one of the established jewels in the cultural calendar is the Musica De Canarias classical music festival. This is now in its 27th year, and is hosted, this February 2011, in venues across the capital islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. So come for Gran Canaria holiday.
The Canaries, lying not far from the Moroccan coast, are on the sea-route from Spain to South America – and so were a natural stopover for 19th century travellers. That included, of course, the touring concert musicians of the age, and the local islanders lost no time in ensuring they took full advantage of those virtuosos passing through. In fact, Tenerife can boast Spain’s oldest private musical society, the Philharmonic Society of Las Palmas, which is over 150 years old.
The festival has already got off to a great start, with the Russian National Philharmonic, and Trondheim soloists playing earlier this month, in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. February carries on in great style with the local Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria performing a 3-piece sequence of Wagner, Schuman and Brahms. Lovers of authentic Baroque will love the chance to see the Les Musiciens du Louvre, from Grenoble, accompanied by the Catalonian choral delights of Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the supreme talents of Charles Dutoit, also make an appearance – both at Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palma de Gran Canaria. The main venue in Tenerife, the Auditorio de Tenerife, belies the assumption that only mainland Spain can dazzle architecturally. Consisting of a sinuous wave of arching white, this superb concert hall makes as dramatic a statement, as any other musical venue you are likely to see. It has recently been extended, and the Main Hall can seat over 400 in a small-scale symphony hall.
The concert hall in Gran Canaria can hardly be said to stand in it’s shadow either ffor your holiday in Gran Canaria. The Auditorio Alfredo Kraus in Las Palmas incorporates a lighthouse, overlooking Las Canteras beach. It affords its 1600 seated attendees stunning views over the Atlantic.
Both venues must rank as amongst the most eclectic and exciting settings, in which to be aurally stimulated, by the delights of classical music.
